European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis has signalled the European Union maintains an "open mind" regarding discussions about a potential customs union arrangement with the United Kingdom, in what appears to be the most positive response from Brussels since Brexit to proposals for closer economic ties. Speaking following meetings with UK officials, Dombrovskis stated he "cannot jump to conclusions" but confirmed the EU is "ready to engage with an open mind" on trade arrangements. He added that the bloc is "open for further discussions" following Prime Minister Keir Starmer's expression of interest in exploring closer cooperation. The comments represent a notable shift in tone from the often acrimonious post-Brexit negotiations that characterised relations under previous governments. A customs union would eliminate tariffs and customs checks on goods traded between the UK and EU, though it would also constrain Britain's ability to negotiate independent trade deals with other countries. Business groups have broadly welcomed the prospect of reduced trade friction, though the proposal has faced criticism from some Conservative politicians who argue it would represent a partial reversal of Brexit. The government has emphasised that any new arrangement would need to be different from the pre-Brexit customs union and would maintain UK sovereignty over regulations and standards.
