South African police confirmed the death of Elizabeth Moselakgomo, a runner who disappeared during a routine jog last week and whose disappearance prompted a nationwide appeal. Her body was found east of Johannesburg on Saturday night, badly bruised and partially clothed, and was identified by relatives on Monday. She is the fifth woman whose body has been found half-naked and bruised in the Kempton Park area, and hours before the identification another woman's body was discovered roughly 25km (15 miles) away by a passer-by walking to work, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told reporters at the scene. Investigators stopped short of attributing the deaths to a serial killer, but said the similarities were sufficiently concerning to justify a public warning, urging women in the area not to walk or run alone, particularly in isolated places. One person has been arrested over the first body and remains in custody, and a task team has been set up to investigate the murders; the other victims have yet to be identified. The case has intensified anger over gender-based violence in a country where, according to UN Women, women are killed at five times the global average rate. Keamo Sefularo, 29, who knew Moselakgomo through their running club, described the discoveries as very scary and said the loss had been heavy for the club, wondering aloud whether her friend would still be alive had she run with company. She described varying her routes and choosing well-lit, visible areas as routine precautions. Merlize Jogiat of the advocacy group Women for Change questioned the purpose of a police service if women must protect themselves, blaming weak implementation of existing laws and arguing that sustained public pressure offered the likeliest route to change. Moselakgomo's family thanked the public for helping search for the mother of one, affectionately known as Tsontso, and praised her eight-year-old daughter for raising the alarm.
