Cambodia Unveils Statue to Honour Landmine-Sniffing Rat Magawa Who Cleared 141,000 Square Metres

Siem Reap ceremony honours Magawa the HeroRAT who detected over 100 landmines with a statue and renewed call for demining support.

Cambodia has unveiled a statue honouring Magawa, the famous landmine-sniffing rat who became one of the most celebrated animals in recent history, at a ceremony in Siem Reap. Magawa, an African giant pouched rat trained by the APOPO organisation, detected over one hundred landmines and cleared more than 141,000 square metres of land during his five-year career before his retirement and subsequent death in 2022. Michael Raine, APOPO's Cambodia Programme Manager, used the ceremony to issue a reminder that the work is far from done, saying the monument for Magawa is a reminder to the international community that there is still a job to be done here. Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, a legacy of the Khmer Rouge era and decades of civil conflict. Magawa became internationally famous in 2020 when he was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal, the first rat in the charity's 77-year history to receive the honour, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to demining efforts. The United Nations has called for continued international support for demining operations in Cambodia, where thousands of people have been killed or maimed by unexploded ordnance since the end of the civil war. The statue, which depicts Magawa in his working harness, has been placed in a public area in Siem Reap, the gateway city to the Angkor Wat temple complex, ensuring maximum visibility to both local residents and international tourists. APOPO continues to train giant pouched rats for mine detection work across several countries, using Magawa's legacy as inspiration for the next generation of HeroRATs.
